Background

Very short bio
Shi Qingxuan, also known as Wind Master Qingxuan, is an elemental master in the Upper Court of heaven. He uses the spiritual device the Wind Master Fan, a fan with the word "feng" (wind) written on it, to help him control the winds. He is the younger brother of the Water Master, Shi Wudu. He has a bright and friendly disposition and gets along with others easily. He considers the Earth Master, Ming Yi, to be his best friend and calls him "Ming-xiong."

** Major spoilers for Shi Qingxuan's character arc and beyond are blacked out **

Pre-canon
- When Shi Qingxuan was born, a fortune teller told his parents that he should be raised quietly and never enter the spotlight. His parents didn't listen, and at the banquet celebrating his birth, a voice called out, "Wretched beginning, wretched end." Afterwards, he developed a bad fever.
- His parents went back to the fortune teller who told them a powerful demon that feeds on people's fear and hopelessness, the Reverend of Empty Words, claimed him and would follow him his whole life and bring misfortune to him. Even though the demon will always follow him, it could be easily tricked. It remembers him by his baby name (Xuan) and the hour of his birth. So they were advised to "send him away" and raise him as their kept daughter instead.
- For ten years, all was well. The demon couldn't find him, and Shi Qingxuan lived at the base of a mountain while his brother trained and cultivated on that mountain. One day, his brother, Shi Wudu, was late coming home so Shi Qingxuan went into the mountains to find him. Along the way, he ended up revealing himself to the demon, and the demon once again attached itself to him.
- Eventually, Shi Wudu ascended and became the Water Master. He took Shi Qingxuan along with him as an official of middle heaven, but even doing that wouldn't let him escape the Reverend of Empty Words.
- Without Shi Qingxuan knowing, his brother used an evil technique to switch his fate with another person whose baby name and time of birth matched his own, He Xuan. Not only did this put the Reverend of Empty Words after him, but He Xuan also had the ability to ascend. So with their fates switched, Shi Qingxuan also ascended and became the Wind Master.
- The Wind and Water Masters were worshipped together for years and years, often by merchants who wished for safe travels. As a result, the Water Master came to be seen as a god of wealth, and their temple was very prosperous. People also thought it was weird to worship two male gods at one temple, so they decided the Wind Master was definitely a woman and possibly married to the Water Master.

Canon timeline
- Shi Qingxuan heard Xie Lian, a thrice-ascended god that he hadn't personally met yet, mention trouble at Banyue Pass. This reminded Shi Qingxuan that he had heard of trouble there before, so he dragged Ming Yi, the Earth Master, down to investigate with him.
- They weren't expecting Xie Lian to actually go and investigate as well, so he tried to delay his party from getting there with a windstorm, and because they didn't know they were working together and didn't recognize each other, they ended up clashing.
- Eventually, they meet up again at the Sinner's Pit, a prison where the ghosts of Banyue soldiers were kept trapped. There, Shi Qingxuan learned the truth of what was happening at Banyue: The people who were disappearing were being lured there by the god Pei Xiu to feed the hungry ghost soldiers. Shi Qingxuan helped free the people trapped down there and took Pei Xiu into custody along with Ke Mo, one of the ghost soldiers.
- At the trial of Pei Xiu, Shi Qingxuan devotedly stuck by the fact Pei Xiu admitted to committing the crimes and should be treated as such. He wasn't wavered by Pei Ming, one of the strongest gods who was Pei Xiu's superior, nor was he persuaded when Pei Ming told him not to cause trouble for Shi Wudu by doing this.
- After the trial, Jun Wu, the Heavenly Emperor, asked Shi Qingxuan to accompany Xie Lian to investigate a distress signal from a heavenly official somewhere in the Ghost City. Having a positive opinion of Xie Lian after meeting in Banyue, Shi Qingxuan agreed.

- Shi Qingxuan and Xie Lian descend to the Ghost City together but get separated. They meet again at a gambling hall where everything was going well until Lang Qianqiu busted in and gave himself away as a heavenly official. Then Xie Lian had to win his freedom, which wasn't too hard since Xie Lian had a good relationship with the lord of the Ghost City, Hua Cheng.
- After winning Lang Qianqiu back, they still had to find the missing official, and Shi Qingxuan suggested that Xie Lian go see Hua Cheng and say that he came especially to see him in order to gather information.
- Ultimately, Xie Lian does end up going to Hua Cheng's Paradise Manor and having a great time. Shi Qingxuan had infiltrated the manor disguised as a woman and got to see that they actually have a close relationship and felt it was kind of unfair that Jun Wu gave Xie Lian this mission.
- When Xie Lian was alone at night, Shi Qingxuan went to him, changed back into a man, and learned from Xie Lian that he had found a secret passage that they can investigate.
- They decide to go and have a great time unlocking the different passages using a dice rolling mechanism where the wrong roll would lead them somewhere horrible. The first bad roll put them in an underground passage with two giant worms, the second led them to a forest where they were pursued by cannibals.
- They finally got to the right place after making Xie Lian roll with some of the luck he borrowed from Hua Cheng. There, they found an injured Ming Yi. Shi Qingxuan was glad to save his best friend even if Ming Yi didn't really want to be called the best friend of some guy in a torn up, ill-fitting, sexy dress. Unfortunately for him, he didn't have the energy to even stay awake, and Shi Qingxuan carried the Ming Yi on his back as they escaped. Except instead of escaping, they ended up literally falling into Hua Cheng's lap in his armory.
- They then learned that Ming Yi had been a spy for Jun Wu and acting as Hua Cheng's underling for ten years. With things getting worse, Shi Qingxuan began using his fan to whip up the winds and escape through the ceiling.
- As he was doing thing, Lang Qianqiu suddenly broke through the roof, and him and Hua Cheng squared off against each other. The fight was clearly going to end badly, so Xie Lian intervened, using a technique to stop their blades and absorb the impact himself. Then he used one of his spiritual devices to tie them all up together, light a fire in the room as a distraction, and let Shi Qingxuan carry them out of there.
- The power of his wind also ended up spreading the small fire Xie Lian started into a massive blaze. Xie Lian was extremely upset about this, and seeing his friend's reaction, Shi Qingxuan felt very guilty. He took them to the Great Martial Hall and tossed out some merits so people would come and attend to Ming Yi and Xie Lian whose arm was badly wounded from absorbing the impact of Lang Qianqiu and Hua Cheng's blades.
- It turns out Ming Yi's condition isn't too serious, and he's taken away to recover. But then Lang Qianqiu suddenly comes out with accusing Xie Lian of being the guoshi* Fang Xin, the person who murdered his entire family and who he recognized by the sword technique he used to defend him.
*(guoshi is...like "teacher of the state"? In this case, he taught Lang Qianqiu swordsmanship.)
- Shi Qingxuan defended Xie Lian against the accusations by questioning how he could not have recognized him before now, why someone who killed everyone else in the royal family would spare the crown prince, etc., but in the end Xie Lian allowed himself to take the blame and refused to say more. He was locked in his heavenly palace while the matter was investigated.
- Except not really because, that same day, Hua Cheng kidnapped him. Lang Qianqiu followed after them while Shi Qingxuan and other heavenly officials attempted to do the same.
- By the time Shi Qingxuan is able to find them, the entire issue of the identity of the guoshi is resolved and he's just happy it was all one big misunderstanding. No questions asked! Although he knew that Xie Lian went with Hua Cheng willingly and had a good relationship with him, he played it off like Hua Cheng had taken Xie Lian as revenge for the destruction of his manor. He did this so people wouldn't talk badly about Xie Lian considering he did just escape house arrest. He offered to pay anything and do whatever was asked.
- Feeling more guilty over upsetting Xie Lian than anything, when Xie Lian asked two favors of him, Shi Qingxuan readily agreed, and ended up looking after two ghosts for Xie Lian: Lang Ying and Ban Yue.
- Shi Qingxuan kept his word and put Lang Ying at his palace while hiding Ban Yue in the Rain Master's domain. Thus, when Pei Ming came looking for Ban Yue, he was instead met with Shi Qingxuan who essentially dared him to enter the Rain Master's domain to get her. This angered Pei Ming who warned him that if he wasn't careful, his behavior would one day bite him. Shi Qingxuan ignored him.
- After that issue was resolved, he told Xie Lian that the Mid-Autumn Festival was soon and invited him along.

- At the Mid-Autumn Festival/Feast, Shi Qingxuan sat near Ming Yi, his brother, his brother's friends (Pei Ming and Ling Wen), and Jun Wu. He invited Xie Lian to sit by him as well. Shi Qingxuan was friendly and social, having a good time, even as an embarrassing play from the mortal realm that depicted him and his brother as husband and wife played- and he quickly tossed out merits to shut that down.
- When the main event happened, the Battle of the Lanterns, Shi Qingxuan came in eighth amongst all the gods, something he was very proud of and demanded praise from his brother and Ming Yi for. Ming Yi placed below him, which Shi Qingxuan thought was unfair, and Shi Wudu ranked highest, which Shi Qingxuan was super pleased with. Then Xie Lian surprisingly and overwhelmingly came in first place, and Shi Qingxuan was happy for him, too.

- Some time later, Xie Lian brought a female ghost, Lan Chang, back to the Great Martial Hall to find the father of the malicious fetus ghost that had strong resentment for its father. Xie Lian wanted to bring that person to justice, but Lan Chang refused to name the father and instead accused Xie Lian of being the father.
- Xie Lian, who abstained from sex as part of his cultivation method, couldn't be the father, and Shi Qingxuan tried to defend him by saying there was no was that Xie Lian had ever kissed someone or even held their hands before--except Xie Lian had done both of those things before, so Shi Qingxuan could only apologize for embarrassing his friend.
- In the end, Xie Lian was cleared and the entire trial ended in failure, but Lan Chang was held in the Upper Court for the time being regardless. Shi Qingxuan told him that he would visit Xie Lian at his shrine again in a few days.

- BIG SPOILERS AHEAD
- The Reverend of Empty Words comes after Shi Qingxuan again just in time for his brother's new Heavenly Calamity. Turns out Ming Yi is actually He Xuan and instead of killing himself like most victims of the Reverend, he became a demon and ate the Reverend of Empty Words instead. Now he's a supreme demon known as Ship-Sinking Black Water and is out for revenge against Shi Wudu. Shi Qingxuan loses his divinity and his Wind Master Fan is broken. They end up in Black Water's domain and Shi Qingxuan learns the truth about what his brother did and what happened to He Xuan. Then he gets to watch He Xuan rip Shi Wudu's head off.
- He's left broken and wishing for death, and He Xuan drops him off in the Imperial Capital. In the span of a few months, Shi Qingxuan manages to permanently break both an arm and a leg, and he becomes a well-liked part of the local homeless community. When the final battle ends up coming to the Imperial Capital, he helps Xie Lian defend the city. He Xuan also shows up (disguised as Hua Cheng) and gives Shi Qingxuan his now-repaired Wind Master Fan and some spiritual power so he can play Wind Master one last time and save the city. Afterwards, the fan breaks again, and He Xuan leaves before Shi Qingxuan can say another word to him.
- Following that battle, Shi Qingxuan continues to live as a beggar in the Imperial Capital. He visits Xie Lian at Puji Shrine now and then and Xie Lian also visits him in the Imperial Capital from time to time. He and his beggar friends also all got to go to the promised post-battle party at Puji Shrine, yay.

- You never see if Shi Qingxuan and He Xuan ever met again, much less get any closure in their shared storyline.
- According to an interview with the author, Shi Qingxuan's broken arm and leg never heal, and he doesn't want them to heal.
